Such is the situation of the ideals of the character Desdemona, from the play The Tragedy of Othello, by William Shakespeare. Desdemona was appeared as a low good, excellence less female in the exposition The Character of Desdemona by John Quincy Adams. We will compose a custom exposition test on The Virtuous Character of Desdemona or then again any comparable subject just for you Request Now As opposed to this, the cutting edge peruser can see that Shakespeare really demonstrated her to be an upright and adoring individual, whose own blamelessness lead to her end. Is Desdemona a highminded character? Is there any individual who can be so generous? Shakespeare is mindful so as to give her a couple of minor imperfections her treatment of Brabantio, her difficult tirelessness about Cassio, her lie about the hanky to make her sensible. In any case, the general character of Desdemona is of high height, it is her very blamelessness that makes her a casualty of condition. As a youthful Venetian lady, Desdemona has carried on with a protected life in her fatherââ¬â¢s home. This protecting gave her a natural energy for all the things that she was denied. She was denied everything that a current ladies would be permitted to do, remembering the option to succumb to cherish with somebody liberated from societal position, age or race. She at that point begins to look all starry eyed, likely just because, with a man quite a long while more established than herself, from a faraway land, and of an alternate race. She is dazzled by the manââ¬â¢s stories and wishes she were a man with the goal that she may likewise have an energizing life, the very life she was prevented in light of the fact that from securing her being a ladies. Realizing that her dad would object to her union with such a man, she runs off with Othello. Desdemona is depicted as a flawless, fearless, delicate lady, profoundly enamored with her better half. In any case, she is certainly not an ideal character however her ethics, and her excellencies are still there. In the play Desdemona says to her dad Brabantio, ââ¬Å"(I,iii;180) My honorable dad, I do see here a separated obligation: To you I am headed forever and training; My life and instruction both do learn me How to regard you; you are the master of dutyâ⬠. Regardless of what the conditions might be, she respected constantly her dad. Despite the fact that still she needed to follow her heart. Her sweetheart Othello says of her, ââ¬Å"She gave me for my torments a universe of sighsâ⬠(I,iii;168) However one individual in time may see an occasion or character, someone else in some other time can see the equivalent to be of totally various implications. John Quincy Adams says that Desdemona needs excellencies and everything she does is influence her dad sadness to his withering bed. He says that ââ¬Å"the enthusiasm of Desdemona for Othello is unnatural, exclusively and only due to his shading. â⬠Which whenever took a gander at by todayâ⬠s measures would hold of no criticalness what the people skin shading is. Second he says that her elopement to him, and mystery marriage with him, show an individual character inadequate in delicacy, however absolutely paying little mind to obedient obligation, of female humility, and of candid disgrace. Third he states, ââ¬Å"her insufficiency in delicacy is recognizable in her direct and talk all through the play. â⬠Altogether he imagines that she has never really wrong when she fled for her affection, and that she has low ethics and no excellencies since she has wronged her dad. As opposed to what John Quincy Adams said of the character of Desdemona, evidence from the play itself states in any case. ââ¬Å"If excellence no pleased magnificence do not have, Your child in-law is definitely more reasonable than blackâ⬠, John Quincy Adams utilizes that statement to represent how the skin shading relationship had demonstrated Desdemona to be of low ethics, and that she had submitted an unnatural thing. When as observed by todayâ⬠s gauges it is completely good for two individuals of various races, ages, genders, nationality and religions to be infatuated and to marry. Another statement from the play utilized by John Q. Adams is, ââ¬Å"With the Moor, sayââ¬â¢st thou? ââ¬Who would be a dad? â⬠that statement assists with outlining how the dad was harmed by the activities of his little girl. When in reality Desdemona intended no damage to her dad, she just needed to do whatâ⬠s directly as is said by Iago, ââ¬Å"She that was ever reasonable and never pleased, Had tongue freely but was never loudâ⬠¦ (II,i;158). Likewise appeared to us by Desdemona herself is the means by which she felt towards her dad from the beginning, again refuting the depiction of her by John Q. Adams, ââ¬Å"(I,iii;180) My honorable dad, I do see here a separated obligation: To you I am headed forever and training; My life and instruction both do learn me How to regard you; you are the master of dutyâ⬠. Desdemona was cherished by many, including Othello, and which is all well and good, ââ¬Å"But that I love the delicate Desdemonaâ⬠(I,ii;24). Indeed, even John Q. Adams is cited saying himself in his article, ââ¬Å"Desdemona, â⬠¦ is agreeable and lovely,â⬠towards the highest point of his last section. Indeed, even he at long last admitted to the way that Desdemonaââ¬â¢s character is pleasant, dazzling, temperate, and still holds its ethics. Numerous individuals from discrete timespans can take a gander at Desdemona in various manners. The cutting edge peruser will apply the advanced parts of life to the story and take a gander at it from that viewpoint, while somebody like John Quincy Adams takes a gander at it from the vision of the timespan he lived in. In any case, it is my maternal grandfatherââ¬â¢s model and impact that is highest in my brain and heart. Three years prior my Grandpa, or ââ¬Å"Papaâ⬠as we call him, started his long, distressing fight with malignant growth. My family and I were in every case truly near him and saw him basically regular, so it was extremely hard for us when we were educated that he had malignant growth. After he was analyzed, Papa and Nanny, my grandma, chose to move in with us and fabricate onto our home. Seeing him and investing energy with him consistently was great, however as we perceived how the infection and its treatment assaulted his body, the time we imparted to them got mixed. The days when he died were probably the most testing days of my life. I could truly disclose to him anything. Genuinely and sincerely he was consistently there for me. I cherished, regarded, and appreciated him; he showed me so much life and how to live it. He was my legend. Since he was not one to brag about his achievements and accomplishments, I truly wasnââ¬â¢t mindful he was perceived as a legend by the Air Force. He was granted the Airmanââ¬â¢s Medal, which is the most elevated award given by the Air Force for valor out of battle. The going with reference peruses: Airman First Class William A. Hand separated himself by bravery including intentional danger of life at Titan II Missile Complex 373-4, Little Rock Air Force Base, Arkansas, on 9 August 1965. On that date, Airman Hand went into a zone where fire had caught 53 men, trying to protect any survivors. In spite of perceivability of short of what one foot in smoke and poisonous vapor and the peril of further blast and fire, Airman Hand endured in his endeavors to look out survivors until it was demonstrated that there were none, indicating remarkable authority and a total dismissal for his own wellbeing while at the same time making these attemptsâ⬠¦ This is an ideal representation of how Papa carried on with his life, doing everything he could to help others paying little heed to how it influenced him. In spite of the fact that I didn't hear this story from him by and by, I took in numerous things from Papaââ¬â¢s activities at the Missile Complex. I currently take a gander at the 10,000 foot view more than I did before Papa kicked the bucket. In that lamentable mishap at the Missile Complex, the ââ¬Å"big pictureâ⬠could have influenced a lot more lives. His unprecedented demonstrations of benevolence have spurred me to be everything I can be for myself just as others. I am presently progressively discerning that all that I do in life influences others here and there. Despite the intense person picture Papa got a kick out of the chance to depict to different grown-ups, with messes with it was a very surprising story. He became like a grandpa to each child he met, particularly the children who rode the uncommon needs transport he drove for the Cheney School District. To them, he was ââ¬Å"Papa Billâ⬠or ââ¬Å"Mr. Billâ⬠and he generally had a high-five for each understudy who jumped on and off his transport. Father tuned in to them, he was touchy to their requirements, and approached them with deference. By his model with individuals everything being equal, I discovered that a bit of caring goes far and itââ¬â¢s not whatââ¬â¢s outwardly that matters; itââ¬â¢s whatââ¬â¢s within that issues. Watching Papa work was an encounter. In any event, when he worked at home, he generally needed to ensure everything was sorted out, prepared, and done accurately without skirting any means. While Papa was in the Air Force, there was nothing of the sort as a multi day, forty-hou r week. He buckled down until the activity was finished and invested wholeheartedly in each and every undertaking he embraced. Perhaps Papa is the explanation I make progress toward flawlessness. Like him, I like to have a set arrangement for any assignment in which Iââ¬â¢m included and I need it to be done accurately without compromising. Papaââ¬â¢s hard working attitude trained me about determination and offering 100% to each try so as to accomplish my objectives. In each activity he held, Papa was a cooperative person. From the get-go in my adolescence, he helped show me the estimation of collaboration and urged me to be simply as well as could be expected be and my partners. As a relative, understudy competitor, and representative, I endeavor to be a contributing individual from the group. Daddy instructed me that everyone is significant; in any event, when one individual exceeds expectations, it is the collaboration that empowers that individual to sparkle. I have likewis e discovered that the capacity to work with various gatherings of individuals is a benefit in each everyday issue. I miss Papa and feel his misfortune profoundly. Life is a valuable blessing; I never acknowledged how valuable it is or how rapidly it can end until Papa passed on. There isn't a day that passes by when I donââ¬â¢t consider him. I am so grateful he was my Grandfather and had such a functioning impact in my life. Once in a while I wish he was still here to offer me guidance, give me passionate help, or just to give me an embrace and state ââ¬Å"I love you.â⬠I decide to respect him and myself by endeavoring to accomplish my objectives, via sufficiently caring to be a cooperative person, and by having a philanthropic way to deal with life. That is Papaââ¬â¢s heritage. Does education or genetic inheritance play an important role in the becoming of an entrepreneur? Entrepreneurs are individuals who take the initiative to invest in a business idea that they consider an opportunity, therefore willing to accept eventual risks and devote a lot of time and effort into their ideas. Because these people are often under a lot of work pressure and frequently need to calculate and innovate their ideas, many people consider Entrepreneurs to be creative and hard workers. However, being an entrepreneur is not something that everybody is willing to do, as it mostly requires huge sacrifices and a minimum of business intelligence to begin with. For this reason a lot of people may argue that they are not born business leaders and will therefore never become an entrepreneur. On the other hand some people say that they have never had the proper education and therefore do not maintain the knowledge or nurture to start a business. When asked to people it is clearly very opinion based whether becoming an entrepreneur is all about nurture or nature or maybe both. The refore this essay will debate both the education and genetic inheritance of entrepreneurship and conclude which one affected entrepreneurs the most to become one. Although many agree that education could play a role in the success of an entrepreneur, a lot of people would guess that the vast majority of entrepreneurs have a college or university degree. (Pg. 9) Why would anyone want to live in the desert? The once militarized desert, created a place for people to have homes. With the population growing in such large numbers and the land growing scarce they had to begin developing the vacant land. The population needed a place to live. (Pg. 4) Dirt and dollar signs, and advertising homes with lush names appealed to the middle and upper classes. The fact that they could live in the fastest growing metropolis in the advanced industrial world made them excited. The city of Los Angeles was new and still developing. In the meantime, the economic state was changing. The rich got richer, the poor were even more poor and the middle class was cut in half. Everything about the growing city seemed perfect, and I suppose for some it was. However, along with growth and change there comes crime. Several incidents took place in Los Angeles against people of color involving the police. Anglos became a minority in the city and county of Los Angeles during the 1980s. (Pg. 7) The city of Los Angeles was created for the white, urbanized, higher middle and upper classes. I think Davis primary thesis or point in the book is just that. Los Angeles was being developed into a city for the wealthy by the wealthy. He describes all the hardships that the poor and middle classes go through to survive in the city. The middle and lower classes are completely separated from the wealthy society as Los Angeles is built and after it exists. It is amazing how the wealthy can create such a perfect utopia for themselves, especially being the minority and with all the people fighting against them. I guess things worked out for them because they fought so hard for all of the changes and ways they wanted things laid out. The biggest fight for the wealthy was the development of Los Angeles. The Home Owners Association made up of the wealthy also played a huge role in the development of the Los Angeles area. The fact that the Home Owners did not want to be classified with the less expensive part of Los Angeles or the wrong side of town caused an uproar. This began what is known as the slow growth movement. (Pg. 156) The first major ground breaking event for the Home Owners Association was in 1985 when they won in court to stop the building of high-rise development. Then the Home Owners Association had Proposition U, which reduced the development of commercial property. Along with those fights, the Home Owners Association also fought for street signs designating that the wealthy lived there. Without spelling it out certain street signs would suggest the class and how much the houses were worth. The reason for all of this commotion, the Los Angeles home owners love their children, but they love their pro perty values more. (Pg. 154) The home owners did not want to loose any value in their homes. They figured that if mass production of tract homes were built, there goes the value of their home. With cheaper homes in the same neighborhood that would cause lower classes to afford homes in their territory, and they would not let that happen. So, the fight continues. Thus, creating several more propositions and then the Lakewood Plan. The Lakewood Plan gave the suburban communities cut-rate prices on all of the vital services. (Pg. 165) Along with the cheapest rate of sales tax, if the property was to be used for their own use. There were twenty six-new cities formed along the Lakewood lines. This allowed the residents to zone out low-income or renting along with insulating their properties from the burden of the rest of Los Angeles. There was actually a reason for gating themselves in on the nice part of town. The Home Owners Association created this plan to keep the homeless, lower cla ss, and criminals out of their neighborhoods. These neighborhoods also had private police that patrolled the area for anything out of the ordinary. The Lakewood Plan was ideal for some of the residents in Los Angeles. The Plan kept the poor in the inner city. The poor could not escape the inner city. The Lakewood Plan populations now exceed one and a half million in L.A. County. (Pg. 168) The black population of the Lakewood Plan has been kept to a minimal. Only 1 percent of the population in the Lakewood Plan is black compared to Los Angeles County at 10 percent. I guess this proves how the people that fought so hard to be kept away from the minorities won. They have very few that live in their neighborhoods, and very few that can even get to where they live. In a way I see this as segregation. Why not be with people of color. I gather that it is not just blacks and Hispanics they dont want living in their territory, but Asians and probably anyone that is not an Anglo. This form of racism is very sad. We have enough racism everywhere else, without saying who can live where and fighting to keep certain ethnic groups out of your neighborhood, when they are such a large part of the citys survival. .u9a810caf7b54323abc2f6e6936d8d236 , .u9a810caf7b54323abc2f6e6936d8d236 .postImageUrl , .u9a810caf7b54323abc2f6e6936d8d236 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u9a810caf7b54323abc2f6e6936d8d236 , .u9a810caf7b54323abc2f6e6936d8d236:hover , .u9a810caf7b54323abc2f6e6936d8d236:visited , .u9a810caf7b54323abc2f6e6936d8d236:active { border:0!important; } .u9a810caf7b54323abc2f6e6936d8d236 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u9a810caf7b54323abc2f6e6936d8d236 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u9a810caf7b54323abc2f6e6936d8d236:active , .u9a810caf7b54323abc2f6e6936d8d236:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u9a810caf7b54323abc2f6e6936d8d236 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u9a810caf7b54323abc2f6e6936d8d236 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u9a810caf7b54323abc2f6e6936d8d236 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u9a810caf7b54323abc2f6e6936d8d236 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u9a810caf7b54323abc2f6e6936d8d236:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u9a810caf7b54323abc2f6e6936d8d236 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u9a810caf7b54323abc2f6e6936d8d236 .u9a810caf7b54323abc2f6e6936d8d236-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u9a810caf7b54323abc2f6e6936d8d236:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Effects of the Atomic bomb EssayDowntown in a word simply became too big for local interests to continue to dominate, and recentering came effectively to mean internationalization. I take this to mean that other cultures were running the downtown and inner city of Los Angeles. Over half of the downtowns major properties were foreign-owned. The Anglo population was having to be serviced by the foreign business owners. The nottori-ya seems to be the ones that had all of the power Downtown or in Los Angeles for that matter. The Japanese would donate money to schools, to the Presidential Library, and to the Mayor ââ¬Ës campaign. This shows that the Japanese were really tryin g to make the effort to bring Los Angeles together. The city and county of Los Angeles changed to cater to the Japanese. They made the ports more accessible, had lower landing fees at LAX, and gave special rights and to foreign investors Downtown. What I do not understand is how come no one was complaining or trying to keep them out of Los Angeles? I guess maybe because the citys growth financially depends largely on the investments and money put into the city. The elites did not even begin to be troubled by the exportable goods or the differences in language. The Tokyo stock dive in early 1990 is the first time anyone began to question the capital driving the Japanese and their money. This gave the people in Los Angeles a real idea of what could possibly happen if a recession happened in Tokyo. While the Japanese were ruling the business and real estate scene, there was someone or something else ruling the streets. This is Vietnam here. (Pg. 268) The Crips and the Bloods run the south central part of Los Angeles. The gang killings had dropped from 24 to zero in ten years. The gang activity is now said to be a part of the large crack trade. Average gang killings on the east side average one per day. (Pg. 270) An economic force of the gang violence has to do with the money made from crack vs. cocaine. One mayor refers to the gangs as the Viet Cong. I think the use of the reference is not in comparison to the Vietnam war. I see the fact that men are killing each other every day and fighting but the reasons for the War and the reason the gangs are fighting are not justifiable. Some argue that we should not have gotten involved in Vietnam, but I feel that we should let the gangs kill themselves out. They live in their own world in Los Angeles, secluded and stuck in the inner city. I do realize that the gangs stem from youth poverty, but instead of arresting all of the 80, 000 members, why not help t hem out of poverty and clean up their neighbor hood?!Gated communities, bum proof benches, sprinklers that come on in the middle of the night at all different times, a gated library, warnings not to steal shopping carts, and with the police coming at you from every angle, who could live like that? Even if you are poor and live in the ghetto part of town there is no reason you have to be under surveillance. Or at least that is how it sounds. I do agree with the part about cleaning up the city and not wanting bums hanging around all over the city. So, instead of paying to prevent all of these things why not help? I have the same feeling about the Bay Area. In San Francisco we are building a billion-dollar stadium, but we cannot help the poverty people that are going to live by it? Or how about all the homeless in San Francisco? I know not all homeless or poor are the same, but downtown San Francisco is a mess. I just picture downtown Los Angeles. There are places in San Francisco and Oakland I wouldnt walk through and I dont think there should be places like that. I think a lot of the cities have the mentality that if they want to be that way, then let them without taking any of the blame themselves. The cities I feel are largely responsible for the way things work in the city. If there are not enough jobs, find a way to create them. If there are homeless people, clean them up and get them working. I know those sound like easy, simple solutions but they are. Our society turns their head when they see homeless or poor people. It is just how things are. Davis brings up these points in his book. I guess what I realize reading this book is that our society really hasnt progressed in the way of breaking any social class barriers. I do see how we have changed with technology and with the development of systems. I can see why people would think Los Angeles is all that great. I think Los Angeles is a painted picture of what people want it to be. The elite dont look twic e at the problems and go on in their own little world. While the gangs do just the same thing except their problems are their world. I have never really been to Los Angeles, other than Disneyland and to get to San Diego. I suppose I turned my head and looked the other way. I am ashamed to say that but, I didnt want to see all the problems with the gangs. My eyes are really open now. Not that I believe everything I read, but there is definitely some truth to what Davis says. As for Hayward, it will never be like Los Angeles. The Bay Area did not start offlike Los Angeles did, we are already really diverse. I believe there is truth in the discussion we had in class if northerners are different from southerners. I would agree. I dont think we would make San Francisco like Los Angeles, but you never know. Especially when the Anglos become the minority. About a year ago, I decided it was time to create a customer service survey. So I went on line, found a surveying program and created some questions. I even went so far as to show it to my business coach, Susan Thomson, to get her feedback. She made some suggestions which I incorporated. Then I did what so many of us do mid-project, which was to sit on my butt. The survey sat there, all dressed up and nowhere to go. I didnââ¬â¢t send it to a single soul. Things go that way sometimes. I have a flip camera, for instance, that I bought two years ago and used for the first timeâ⬠¦ ummmâ⬠¦ a month ago. Even then, I did not post the video I took with the camera. There are also certain collections of notes and papers ââ¬â the ones Iââ¬â¢m not sure what to do with ââ¬â that gather dust in piles. And my new printer sat in its box on the floor of my office for a week before I finally pulled it out and set it up. All these tasks, and more, live in the realm of ââ¬Å"Important, not Urgent,â⬠one of the four quadrants identified by Steven Covey in his best-selling business management book, The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People. Often, until something happens to make one of these items urgent (such as I need to print something and I canââ¬â¢t get my old printer to work), I am likely to procrastinate completing the task. Letting ââ¬Å"Important, not Urgentâ⬠tasks fall by the wayside leads to a high-pressure life. If I wait until an item is urgent before doing it, then I set myself up for stress. Everything is always urgent! Plus I never get things done that would make a huge difference for me or my business, even though they might be high-priority tasks. Surveying my customers is one of those items that is highly important for my business, but not urgent. It will never get done if I wait for it to become urgent. I have found a few tricks that help me break through the wall of resistance that keeps ââ¬Å"Important, not Urgentâ⬠things from getting done. 1. Take stock. Identify whatââ¬â¢s important. Every quarter, I attend a meeting of small businesses through a business coaching organization, ActionCOACH. During these quarterly workdays, we go through exercises that are hugely valuable in getting perspective on our business priorities. This past January, client contact and assessment came up as a high priority for The Essay Expert. When I created my calendar of tasks to complete over the quarter, my stagnating client survey came up high on the list of things to do. 2. Break it down. Important tasks often seem overwhelming because they are multi-faceted. If I can break the tasks down into small, attackable pieces, then I stop feeling overwhelmed. I know I can do something like ââ¬Å"Call virtual assistant to talk about survey options.â⬠Itââ¬â¢s so much less intimidating than ââ¬Å"Survey all my past clients.â⬠3. Put it on the calendar. If my calendar tells me to ââ¬Å"Prepare surveyâ⬠or ââ¬Å"create list of emails for survey recipientsâ⬠at a certain date and time, I will either do it at that date and time or reschedule it so it gets done. I am a slave to my calendar and thatââ¬â¢s a good thing. After my quarterly workday in January, survey-related tasks went onto my calendar. They started to get done. [This calendaring system is how I get my blog written every week as well. Itââ¬â¢s on my calendar, so I do it!] 4. Make promises to other people. Create accountability! In my January blog article, The Essay Expertââ¬â¢s New Yearââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"Ressaylutionsâ⬠- Completing 2011 and Creating 2012, I promised you that I would be sending out a client survey. Suddenly I became accountable to someone else. Since I wanted to announce at the end of 2012 that I did what I promised, I got into action! 5. Get help. It didnââ¬â¢t take me long to realize that I was not going to do this survey thing on my own. So I got help. My new virtual assistant, Jeanne, handled some of the logistical pieces of getting the survey finalized and sent out. I asked my web designer to take care of creating a new email address, clientsurvey@theessayexpert.com, for purposes of administering the survey. Getting the support I needed accelerated the project tremendously. 6. Know the tools at your disposal. If youââ¬â¢re sending out a survey, it helps to use Survey Monkey. If you want to get piles of notes and papers off your desk, it helps to use a scanner and the brilliant cloud-based note-organizing program Evernote (www.evernote.com). If you draw on your resources, you will almost always find an easier and/or alternative way to do what youââ¬â¢ve been putting off. Ask around. Be on the lookout for new tools and techniques. Those overwhelming tasks might not be as complicated as you had imagined. 7. Take action. It always comes down to just doing it. If I donââ¬â¢t take action, then regardless of how many action items are on my calendar, I wonââ¬â¢t get results. If I take action, especially well-considered action (see #1-6), I have a fighting chance! 8. Keep taking action. This item might sound a lot like #7. But itââ¬â¢s different. Someone very smart said that the secret to getting results in life is to keep taking action until you get them. You might take initial action, not get the result you want, and promptly give up. The key to getting important stuff done is to stay in action even when things look like theyââ¬â¢re not working or not going fast enough. If you give up on taking action, you give up on your results. 9. Take responsibility. Whether your important tasks are getting done or not, you are the one who is responsible for the situation. Blaming outside circumstances (ââ¬Å"The survey program wouldnââ¬â¢t let me ask the questions I wanted to ask!â⬠or ââ¬Å"I donââ¬â¢t have time!â⬠) will stall you out. In the survey project, many things interrupted me and presented obstacles. I chose to find a way around them. 10. Celebrate! I am going to celebrate getting my survey out. Sure, there will be a whole set of new tasks to conquer when this one is complete. But first itââ¬â¢s time to acknowledge what got done. And it IS going out!! Step by step, with lots of support along the way, I completed this important task. If you are a past client, you probably got an email yesterday requesting that you complete The Essay Expertââ¬â¢s client survey. If not, please take some time to respond now. TEE Client Survey. I look forward to being able to report on the results! Iââ¬â¢d love to hear what tasks you are putting off that might get done if you put the eight items above into action. What progress will you be able to celebrate three months from now? ðŸâ¢â Log in to Reply The Essay Expert says: February 22, 2012 at 9:58 am Youre welcome Jan! Business cycles are the fluctuations that an economy experiences over a particular period. In United States, it is usually measured by the national bureau of economic research (NBER) often noted by expansion and recession. The cycle begins with development that shows an economic growth of high income, reduction of unemployment and increased productivity while depression refers to contraction of the exceeding highlighted indicators. For expansion, it is the time from one trough of the previous cycle to peak of the current cycle, and the vice-versa is true for recession. The needs of employees are often met by the leadership of a company or organization. The needs of employees within Wal-Martââ¬â¢s different functional areas will therefore be met under a unified team of leaders. There are diverse needs among employees such as effective compensation, benefits, good working environment and suitable working hours. These needs would be affected by the new leadership structure. For example the needs of employees within the Logistics function are likely to be different from those within the Real Estate function. In order for these change to be effective, it is therefore necessary for the company leadership to effectively communicate with employees and understand their needs so that an effective plan for meeting them would be implemented (Vakola & Nikolaou, 2009). Since the organizational change at Wal-Mart is aimed at improving the service delivery to the customers, it is evident that the company is likely to recruit new employees to ensure that this objective is achieved effectively. The management of organizational change includes meeting the training needs of new employees (Tsoukas & Chia, 2008). This means that the new leadership team within Wal-Mart will be responsible for developing a training program in which the skills and knowledge of new employees on the job will be effectively attained. In the selection of new employees, the company must adhere to the recruitment policies within its policy notebook. This means that the required level of education, experience, skills or knowledge for the various functional areas of the company must be exhibited by the new employees. The recruitment process must also ensure that the new employees will add more value to the company through promoting its productivity and making it more competitive in its market. In this light one gets to discuss the Structural functionalist theory and the Conflict Theory which are both theoretical perspectives found in the Media and Society. (a)(i) First and foremost, the Structural functionalist theory is amongst the theories found on the aspect of organization of society. This theory can also be referred to as Structural Functionalism, and it has the following assumptions. To begin with, the Structural Functionalist theory postulates or suggests that society is a complex system whose various parts (structures) work together to produce stability and solidarity.à These structures are a part of society because of their functionality in ensuring stability and solidarity. In other words, without their functionality in ensuring these two aspects mentioned prior, these structures would not be part of society.à To add on, Durkheim and Comte suggest that these parts of the society work together like the parts of a body for the benefit of society. In other words, one can say that these parts are inter-dependent, that is, they rely on each other to fully serve their purpose.à It is important for one to also note that this theory has two functionalities, and these are Manifest Functions and Latent Functions. In this aspect, Manifest functions in this case are those objective consequences contributing to the adjustment or adaptation of the system which are in tended and recognized by participants in the system. Examples include education, moral guidance, law and order maintenance. On the other hand, Latent functions are those functions that are neither intended nor recognized. In other words, they are somewhat less important as compared to Manifest Functions. Furthermore, organization of society theoretical perspectives also include the Conflict Theory. It has the following assumptions: The Conflict Theory suggests that society is made up of groups that are competing for scarce resources. In other words, this theory states that society is divided or disintegrated into various groups that scramble, if not fight for, these resources in order to survive be it socially, economically or politically. To add on, the conflict theory also suggests that power and inequality are the main characteristics of society and social groups are involved in power struggle (Karl Max). One can simply say that this means that the system called Society is patterned with power dynamics, and in those power dynamics are power struggles. Furthermore, this theory also states that this power struggle mentioned above, is a struggle for dominance amongst classes, genders, races, religions to mention but just a few. This simply means that in the entirety of society, there is the aspect of ââ¬Å"survival of the fittestâ⬠in which the dominant ones survive and rule over the defeated or over the weak. Inà addition, the conflict theory also assumes that there is social domination of subordinate groups through the power coercion of dominant groups. Furthermore, this theory also assumes that the dominant groups create rules for success and opportunity in society and they monopolize control, power, privilege and authority. In addition to the above mentioned, the conflict theory also assumes that the primary cause of social problems is the exploitation and oppression of subordinate groups by the dominant. A typical example is the conflict within the Ndebele State. It has 3 states, namely the Enhla, Ezansi and the Hole. The original Ndebele people were found in the upper class and they exploited some classes like the Hole for example and this led to a lot of conflict within the Ndebele society. Hence, it is typical for exploitation and oppression of subordinates to be the primary cause of social problems. One can say that these theories are valid in explaining the existence of, and the relationships between individuals and groups in society to a larger extent. To begin with, the assumptions of the structural functionalist theory are valid to a larger extent. The assumption that society is a complex system whose various parts (structures) work together to produce stability and solidarity is valid because it shows us that society has relationships, and that in their relationships, they have a goal which is to produce solidarity and stability. For example, the Zimbabwean society, the government in particular, always stresses on the need for the Zimbabwean society to be stable in terms its economy, and that it should maintain and promote solidarity. These two aspects are usually mentioned by the President of Zimbabwe R. G. Mugabe. To add on, one can say that the assumptions of the structural functionalistic theory are valid in explaining the existence of, and the relationships between individuals and groups in society. For example the one that states that society is made up of parts which work together like the parts of the body is a very practical assumption about societyââ¬â¢s relationships. One can argue that in society there are groups of people, for example workers, students, civil servants, aristocrats and so forth. One can give anà illustration by referring to the Great Zimbabwe State that once existed in Zimbabwe. Miners could not survive alone because they depended on blacksmiths to make them tools for digging and excavating. Thus this simply shows that indeed societyââ¬â¢s groups which are seen as parts in this theory, are inter-dependent on each other hence this theory is valid if not actually practical. Furthermore, these two theories are valid because they show us the existence of conflict within the society. The conflict theory states that society is made up of groups that compete for resources and this is very true and practical. A situation like this happened in Zimbabwe during the colonial era whereby whites were exploiting the resources available in Zimbabwe which eventually led to the Chimurenga war. The relationship between these two races was very hostile and sour because of the competition for these scarce resources. This war took place because there was intense competition for resources in the country and as such, this war was to settle the fight. Thus in essence, these theories are quite valid in explaining the existence of relationships in society. Society is made of classes that compete for scarce resources and this is best illustrated in the conflict theory. It states that in society, dominant classes oppress and exploit the lower classes which eventually leads to conflict. An example is the Apartheid Era in South Africa. The Boers were oppressing and exploiting the blacks and their resources. The blacks advocated for equality, through their icon Nelson Mandela. This sour between the blacks and the whites led to a serious conflict which was catalyzed by the competition for resources. Hence one can argue that these theories explain the existence of, and the relationships between individuals and groups in society to a larger extent. In addition, these theories are valid in explaining the relationships that exist in society to a larger extent. They enable one to fully understand the fact that conflict is part and parcel of society and that it is sometimes needed in order for development to occur. To add on, these theories also enhance oneââ¬â¢s understanding of how society is divided and structured. Ità shows that society has groups and individuals who live together in relationships, and that in these relationships, they serve to achieve certain goals and objectives like solidarity for example. In a nutshell, the conflict and the social functionalist theory are theories that are very much socialistic and they help one to get the concept of how society is organized, how the members of society relate to each other in achieving their goals and also that conflict exists in society. These theories are somewhat a blue print of how society is organized and how its members are inter-dependent on each other to survive. Essay -- Halloween ArgumeOkay, I admit this time of year is a guilty pleasure of mine, with the changing of the seasons. The crisp cool days and evenings let you cook hearty healthy meals that fill the home with such sumptuous, delicious smells. Itââ¬â¢s the time of year for hot apple cider, pumpkins and families that get together. Harvest time used to be a time when all the hard work of the year was being stored up for the long cold months of winter. We recently had the pleasure of hearing: ââ¬Å"Trick or treat, smell my feet, give me something good to eat.â⬠Why do we say this? Where did this tradition come from? What is the reason for our dressing up, and the pumpkins that we carve? Who originally came up with this celebration and why? Letââ¬â¢s not forget the all-important slasher movies and TV specials. Although many people feel Halloween is not a holiday and should not be celebrated, I believe it is a holiday, because it is steeped in tradition, truly an American holiday, and a social revelry of merriment that everyone can enjoy. Murray Hope explains on Joelle's Sacred Grove Entrance website, that this ancient holiday celebration began with the Celts (people of Ireland, Scotland, Wales and England) approximately in the 5th century BCE. After the occupation of the British Isleââ¬â¢s many of the Roman pagan ways were added to this celebration such as their Goddess of harvest, Pomona whose sacred fruit is the apple. It is believed that this is why we celebrate the festivities with apple cider, bobbing for apples and candy apples (Wolf). This all lasted until Christianity decided to convert all pagans, and incorporated many of their holidays into the churches calendar. This give way to decide in this type of study, the willingness and interest to know the reality in students behaviour on what reasons why students violates the rules and regulations inside the school. At present, the researcher of this simple research is a first year student in A.B. Philosophy in Bicol University. Having this opportunity to learn the basic skill in writing under English 10 and as a final requirement in accomplishing the subject, the researcher never hesitate to present this simple and uncontrollable problems experience by teachers and parents on the child performances in the school. The chosen title, Reasons why students violate rules and regulations is something to use for reference by teachers and parents to discipline the child. This is a simple and humble work of a beginner, inspired by the teacher in this subject and the encouraging manner of the researcher family and friends. This work made everything easy for reference and guidelines both for teachers, parents and students. And the researcher is ready to any correction from this noble work, so to develop more on this special skill in writing. The 4th yr. students in secondary schools in Legazpi City, both in public and private schools experience student violating schools rules and regulations. Despite of the disciplinary measures of each school, students violates willingly. This work will define student violators and as teachers and parents of these poor students, both performances will be addressed. And the purposes of this study are to widen the concern for child performances in the school, and for teachers and parents to check and note for student violators in a school. SIGNIFICANCE In every heart, there is a need to discipline. Student violator is a heart that needs a support for discipline. Not only here in our own local school but worldwide. In every child officially enrolled in any school has the right to learn the social graces needed to developed self-discipline, to internalize discipline in every action and decision. The researcher would like to emphasize this simple yet uncontrollable problem among students to the local and national level. This study will also serve the purpose on reasons why the students violate rules and regulations, like the ones below: 1. Teachers and parents failed to implement a proper discipline among students. 2. The absence of recognition in every student profiles or portfolio. 3. Critical identification for every studentââ¬â¢s behaviour, needs and reasons. 4. Over ââ¬â protectiveness and misuse authority. Thus, the purpose of this research is to widen the awareness on reasons why the students violate rules and regulations, to be familiar of their performances, in support to teachers/parents to discipline properly the child through the check and note for student violators in school. As one challenge in education, the most important aspect is to discipline the child and eventually to internalize it. SCOPE AND DELIMITATION The study consists of 4th year students in Legazpi City, from Divine Word College of Legazpi High School Department. The main objective of the study is to identify the reasons on why the studentââ¬â¢s violates rules and regulations on their last year of study in the secondary school. The researcher limits the research to secondary students in Legazpi City and for the 4th year students only, both from Divine Word College of Legazpi High School Department. This is to refer for a feasible results and better interest for teachers and parents to watch the child and guide to gain a better performance in the school. CHAPTER 2 Review of Related Literature School is the training ground of any person officially enrolled to excel academically and for self-discipline to become a better individual. Schools provide the guidelines as disciplinary measures for students and for teacher supervisions. No school is exempted from student violators, very school year the school experience the difficulty in schools discipline. Teachers and parents are collaborators in disciplining the violators. DEFINITION OF TERMS The researcher likes to focus on the following definition of terms so as to attain the research better and simple. 1. School, is an institution designed for teaching the students (or pupils) under the direction of teachers. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/School)1 2. Student, is someone who attends an educational institution or someone who studies especially at a school. (http://www.thefreedictionary.com/student).2 3. Teacher, is the one who teaches in a school and a person especially hired by the school. (Learnerââ¬â¢s Dictionary)3 4. Violations, is to break a law or regulations intentionally or unintentionally. (Webster New Dictionary) 4 5. Parent, is the caretaker of their offspring. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parent)5 RELATED LITERATURE The act of doing something that is not allowed by a law or rule and the act of ignoring or inferring with a personââ¬â¢s rights. (Learnerââ¬â¢s Dictionary)6 In like manner, it is been an old story, when teen agers left home for school, they thrill at the first opportunity to test â⬠their wingsâ⬠as a young adults.(SunSentinel.Com)7 freed from being under the all seeing eyes of their parents and often unwelcome supervision, judgements and penalties of their parents. Some young student turns successfully in their new found freedom, but others turns violators due to lack of discipline and maturity as well. In this case, the researcher has discovered some basic solutions for this part. As the purpose of this study: 1. To widened the concern for child performances in the school 2. To create teachers and parents check and note for students violators in the school. With this basic concepts, the researcher, emphasize the need to all records of a child performance while in the school, to prioritize the violators and teachers are encouraged to identify students and informed the parents. Likewise, parents are ask to become responsible to check and notes their child performances in the school. Internationally, some violators failed to confess the causes of their irresponsible acts in the school, Some are victims of maltreatments of parents which the students denies all truth and sometimes violators are victims of their own teachers like in Darling Town state a primary school teacher who was previously accused of attempting to ââ¬Å"dackâ⬠a student and investigated for ââ¬Å"kissing and cuddlingâ⬠(couriermail.com.au)8, What effects will it brings to a child in the future? It could be a lost to authority in the school and even to parents and which could turn to become violators in the school. The reason some people break rules is because it may make them look cool, or it may be funny, but sometimes people just donââ¬â¢t know better. Remember that everyone was raised differently, so donââ¬â¢t discriminate, Just try to get along. And sometimes getting in trouble is fun, or sometimes worth it, it depends on who you are. (http://wiki.answers.com/Q/Why_do_some _students_break_school_rules)9. Schools have policies that are being implemented for the general welfare of its constituents. These policies provide a set of rules that the students, teachers, etc. should follow. These rules are necessary for the order and uniformity of the students within the school premises. Even with the presence of these rules, some of the students violate them disregarding the sanctions that go along with it. The word policy originated from the Latin word ââ¬Å"politiaâ⬠or ââ¬Å"polityâ⬠. Defined as a definite course of action adopted for the sake of expediency, facility, etc.; an action or procedure conforming to or considered with reference to prudence or expediency. (http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/policy)10. Here are some violations that are commonly violated by students, students skip school. Students skip school; it is the behaviour that the children have not enjoyed to learn then they avoid or escape from the school. In my opinion, I totally agree this problem is occurred from several reasons which their family and teachers should coordinate to solve this problem. First reason which may affect student to abstain from school; the child cannot understand the lesson, then they lack of interest in learning and a focus on learning. So, it may make them to have an experiencing failure in school and lower academic achievement. In additional, they may not have the close friends and their friends may threaten them. Second reason, their family is unhappy, poor or rich but lack of love and care from their parents. And the last reason is school and teacher, they do not understand children. There are strict rules and teacher is an authoritarian and inflexible or teacher may punish severely student . Also some teacher has the teaching method as not interesting. These reasons should influence students to keep away from school. For the ways to solve the problem, family and teachers should be the main person to solve the problem, thus I thought that it should begin at home first. Whenever the parents have been known the disappointment because of their child, then they should calm their anger first to find the cause of the children leaving school. The parents should not refer to the question ââ¬Å"Whyâ⬠¦.â⬠to their child but the parents should begin with love and understanding, and ready to forgive them. Then, the parents begin to solve the problems and engage with the children and the school in order to provide opportunities and activities to reduce the value feeling of children and attitude of children since someone thought that they devalue.11. The next thing to be discussed is about why kids join Gangs; this can be also one reason why students are motivated to violate school rules. Why do Kids join Gangs? Factors motivating kids to join gangs vary individual to individual. A multitude of social and economic reasons can be involved. Power, status, security, friendship, family substitute, economic profit, substance abuse influences, and numerous other factors can influence kids to join gangs. Gang members also cross all socio-economic backgrounds and boundaries regardless of age, sex, race, economic status, and academic achievement. Gang violence typically involves a larger number of individuals Gang-related violence tends to be more retaliatory and escalates much more quickly than non-gang violence Gang activity is usually more violent in nature and often involves a greater use of weapons. School and public safety officials must look at gang activity differently and not as one-on-one, isolated incidents. Otherwise, the problem can escalate so quickly that a school lunchroom fight between rival gang members will escalate into a potential drive-by shooting just hours later at school dismissal. School officials must still discipline individual students involved in gang offenses on a case-by-case basis based upon their individual actions in violating school rules, but educators must see the forest with the trees and recognize that these offenses are interrelated and part of a broader pattern of gang-related misconduct and violence. She spent her girlhood in Oakland, but she perceived that Oakland was inauthentic. When she mentioned France, where she lived most of her life, she said: ââ¬Å"It is not real but it is really thereâ⬠(Stein 1970: 2). France is more tangible to her than her nation. What does the nation mean to Stein? What is the essence of nation? Watson posits that ââ¬Å"a nation is a community of people, whose members are bound together by a sense of solidarity, a common culture, a national consciousnessâ⬠(Watson 1997: 1). A more familiar definition was coined by Anderson: ââ¬Å"It is an imagined political community and imagined as bothâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬Å"The press always takes on the form and coloration of the social and political structures within which it operatesâ⬠(Siebert 1963: 2). However, the influence of the nation d iffers from different media systems. Hallin and Mancini, in their book, lay out a framework for comparing media systems. They select four major dimensions: the media market, the political parallelism, the journalistic professionalism and the state intervention system. (Hallin Mancini 2004: 21). In order to analyse how ideas of the nation can be related to media systems, this paper selects two dimensions from the frame: the political parallelism and the journalistic professionalism. By looking at different relationships between the nation and media system in these two models, this article elaborates the latent national framing of media system and the possible professionalism of media. Whereas, the practical circumstances are far more complicated than two models; in order to be specific, the paper just select two perspectives. Media are magnifiers? In order to illustrate how media maintain the continuous national consciousness among the public, it is imperative to know the traits of media system. According to Meyrowitz, media are compared to ââ¬Å"conduits, languages and environmentsâ⬠(Meyrowitz 1993: 56). These three metaphors are woven together in media system, building the national consensus together. For that reason, I donââ¬â¢t view its history as a story of the clash of defensible but irreconcilable views, from which the most we can expect is a sympathetic understanding of how things looked to the participants. (Scott Soames) For the value of the history of philosophy . . . lies not only in the fact that we can learn from our predecessors how to address in different ways the questions that concern us, but also in the fact that we can learn from them how to ask different questions, or how to ask our questions differently. (Paul Franks) These quotes provide different pictures about the history of philosophy. The notion of progress plays a key role in Soamesââ¬â¢ account. Because we know more now than we did in the past, Soames claims the history of philosophy should involve a careful analysis of both the achievements and insights that have allowed the field to progress as well as the missteps which have frustrated this process. Soames would have history vindicate our current philosophical understanding. Paul Franks, on the other hand, wants to problematize this straightforward account of how we progressed from the past to the present. Answer: Dealing with pediatric patients can be challenging as some of them have not yet developed the essential communication skills to explain their situation. Bloody diarrhea is a common occurrence in many children which might be influenced by many factors, and the best way to find out the details is by questioning the health care providers. Some of the questions to ask are the amount of blood in the stool as it might determine the extent of the illness. Is there any sign of an anal fissure which might be contributing to the blood? Is the child feeling any kinds of pain in the toilet? The pediatrician should also find out the possibilities of inflammatory bowel infections in the patient (Dinleyici, 2009). These queries will change depending on the ages of the patients as there are different causes and implications of a bloody stool for different children. The infants below one year of age might experience the situation due to breast milk or cow milk colitis. For children above one year of age, the condition can occur because of ulcerative and Crohn's colitis. Their ages can, therefore, be a sign of a severe disease and it is, thus, essential to put into consideration. A historical finding about the need for a clinical test is that although most instances of bloody stool might be regular for pediatric patients, some of them require diagnosis as they might be a severe detection diseases (Dinleyici, 2009). Bloody stools for older children who are above two years of age might be the signs of Bacterial gastroenteritis or even Crohns disease. The most basic diagnostic studies to take are intestinal infections because they might be the contributing factors to the condition. Examples of expected diagnosis in this case might be bacterial gastroenteritis, crohons disease and ulcerative infection. Gastroenteritis diagnosis can vary from food allergies and poisoning, cholera and Ulcerative colitis which are more likely to face the young children. Vomiting cases are caused by many factors depending on the ages of the patients involved. Sometimes it might be due to stomach upsets and food poisoning, but some others are severe (NCCWCH, 2009). For infants, it might be difficult to establish the real cause of vomiting, but most of the times it is due to infections in the intestines. The situation might be indicated by higher temperatures of up to 38 C or even higher which necessitates the need for a doctor examination. The case differs for older children whereby vomiting is mainly because of infectious gastroenteritis. They occur for a short while after taking meals which might contain bacterial toxins. In adolescents, the situation might be similar to that of children, which are mostly infections. It might, however, differ in the cases of pregnancy, gastric ulcers, an overdose of s ubstances and drugs, pancreatitis and much more for adolescents (NCCWCH, 2009). According to clinical findings, a diagnosis is crucial in the cases of gastroenteritis in children as it might be a sign of severe infections of the intestines which can lead to health complications (NCCWCH, 2009). The primary diagnostic study should be of the food intake that the child has taken in the past days to examine the presence of toxins. Poison and allergies in diet contribute to Gastroenteritis and should, therefore, be taken seriously. Since some of these patients are too young to realize the extreme of their pain, parents should always investigate the situation and seek medical advice when required. References Dinleyici, E. Answer: Introduction The aim of the assignment is to describe personal understanding after attending and participating in the module including Emotional intelligence, leadership, Culture diversity, Decision making, communication, Prioritization, and change. In response to the learning gained from the module, an action plan on implementing this learning is developed. The experience is described using the Bortons' (1970) Framework Guiding Reflective Activities. Reflection I have attended the lM program with the objective of learning the leadership skills. I wanted to gain insights into the cultural diversity. Since healthcare sector, includes the diversity due to patients visiting from diverse cultural and linguistic background, learning skills to manage patients in peak hours is necessary. During several instances, I failed to address patients queries due to lack of cross-cultural communication skills. I was unable to handle my first experience of patients death in an emergency room as the charge nurse. I lacked the emotional resilience. Therefore, I decided todevelop nursing leadership skills and professional competencies such as quick decision-making in the critical situation, respecting diversity and ways to prioritise nursing responsibilities. In this experience, the best thing I have learnt is the different leadership theories, and the most effective one as I perceive is the situational leadership theory. According to McCleskey, (2014), this theory emphasise on using the leadership style that most suits the situation, instead of adopting and learning only one style of leadership. I agree because innursing practice it is critical to predicting as to what would be the next clinical situation in intensive care unit. Experiences of patient death are inevitable in the nursing profession. Patients suffer chronic illnesses and experience patient-centred care. Emotional intelligence is essential for better patient satisfaction and model the behaviour that is expected from healthcare staff. With the help of emotional intelligence, a nurse can better reason using emotions, correctly identify emotions in self and others, understand and manage other emotions during emotional situations such as sudden death due to stroke. Emotional in telligence skills are essential for transforming challenged in teamwork and patient care (Aradilla-Herrero et al., 2014). Learning about cultural diversity made it clear that it gives several opportunities to deliver high quality care. For instance, taking patient history or health assessment can be easy when the nursing workforce reflects the patients communication styles, demographics and culture awareness (Mareno Hart, 2014). It will help patients feel comfortable. Else, it will require the use of medical interpreter even for petty issues. Thus, cross-cultural communications skills are required to accepts the individual differences and adapt different skills from co-workers. Communication learning is not only to maintain diversity but also to collaborate with the interdisciplinary team. Good communication skills both verbal and non-verbal better help to understand the patient's feelings with empathy. According to Crystal Crystal (2016) better nurse-patient communication help, establish the therapeutic relationship. It is more likely to promote patients participation in care. Nursing practice involv es ethical issues, and hence clinical decision should be made effectively. Training on decision-making is essential to be able to decide on best intervention among others. To guide the decision-making, critical thinking is necessary to handle the dynamic situation. Decision-making skills had better help in prioritizing the care by unfolding the clinical situation. I have learned the value of the time management and prioritization of the patient needs. Constant reassessment of the situation is necessary (Johnsen et al., 2016). For instance, cleanliness is less important than maintaining the patient airways. Adapting to change in the dynamic nursing profession will help play roles that are more complex. Overall, this module was effective in teaching the way to professional development. Therefore, my action plan is to put this learning into practice. Using the SMART approach that refers to Specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and time goals (Jung et al., 2015), I have developed a SMART plan for myself. I want to improve the following skills in next three months- Verbal skills Nonverbal skills- to deal with patients with disability Collaborative skills- to collaborate with interdisciplinary team - greater engagement with nurses and co-worker while decision-making Greater participation in emergency care services- As it involves decision-making and practice prioritisation Take initiatives to mentor and lead my juniors- to implement leadership skills Engage in feedback session- take feedback from peers, nurse mentor, mangers and preceptors on improvement of my skills- thrice in a month to evaluate the improvement Attend two workshops by the end of the year on cross-cultural communication- to adjust to diversity Engage in critical reflection to deal with job burnout, stress in emergency room by thinking alternate means to highest quality of patient comfort and care (Nicol Dosser, 2016) In future, my action plan will demonstrate the better understanding of patient's concerns, respect cultural diversity, better response to death and die and collaborate with the interdisciplinary team. On the seventeenth of that month, their child Alphonse, later known as Al, was born. He grew up in a rough neighborhood and was a member of two "kid gangs," the Brooklyn Rippers and the Forty Thieves Juniors (www.chicagohistory.org/history/capone.html). He enlisted, as a waiter-bouncer for Frankie Yales Harvard Inn at Coney island in the summer of 1917, where his face was scarred in a knife attack by Frank Gallucia( " . Capone was later forced to move to Chicago when he became wanted by the police for attempted murder. He began working for a former acquaintance Johnny Torrio, who handled a local vice lords assets. The murder of the vice lord, rocketed Capone from his current position of a lowly bouncer all the way to a place in history as one of the Prohibition eras most prominent underworld bosses and one of the most treacherous gangsters of all time. Capone combined many different gangs, including the... gang, who introduced the Thompson submachine gun (into) gang warfare, to form the Chicago Syndicate, or Outfit( " . After Torrio was shot in the Chicago Beer Wars and he retired in New York, Capone inherited the Syndicate. The five-year war eventually erupted in a brutal massacre at 2122 North Clark Street on February 14, 1929. Capone gangsters lined up six members of a rival gang and an innocent bystander and machine-gunned them. The intended target was not even present at the time. This atrocity, cunningly named the Valentines Day Massacre, awoke a feeling of public indignation in all of America. To complicate Capones life further he was declared Public Enemy Number One by the Chicago Crime commission. They intended to turn the public even more against him. ... During World War II he maintained an uneasy alliance with the United States and Great Britain to fight Nazi Germany, but dropped any illusions of friendship after the war. As Stalin sought to expand Communism throughout Eastern Europe and around the world, he helped spark the Cold War and the subsequent arms race. (1894). (Photo by Apic/Getty Images) Joseph Stalin was born Iosif Vissarionovich Dzhugashvili in Gori, Georgia (a region annexed by Russia in 1801) on December 6, 1878 by theJulian calendar then in use; using the modern calendar, that converts to December 18, 1878). He later claimed his official birthdate as December 21, 1879). He was the third son of four children born to Ekaterina Georgievna Geadze (Keke) and Vissarion (Beso) Djugashvili, but he was the only one to survive past infancy. Stalinââ¬â¢s parents had a turbulent marriage, with Beso often beating his wife and son. Part of their marital strife came from their very different ambition for their son. Keke recognized that Soso, as Joseph Stalin was known as a child, was highly intelligent and wanted him to become a Russian Orthodox priest; thus, she made every effort to get him an education. On the other hand, Beso, who was a cobbler, felt that working-class life was good enough for his son. Education The argument came to a head when Stalin was 12 years old. Beso, who had moved to Tiflis (the capital of Georgia) to find work, came back and took Stalin to the factory where he worked so that Stalin could become an apprentice cobbler. This was the last time Beso would assert his vision for Stalins future. With help from friends and teachers, Keke got Stalin back and once again got him on the path to attend seminary. After this incident, Beso refused to support either Keke or his son, effectively ending the marriage. Keke supported Stalin by working as a laundress, though she later secured more respectable employment at a womens clothing shop. Keke was right to note Stalins intellect, which soon became apparent to his teachers. Stalin excelled in school and earned a scholarship to the Tiflis Theological Seminary in 1894. However, there were signs that Stalin was not destined for the priesthood. Prior to entering the seminary, Stalin was not only a choirboy, but also the ruthless leader of a street gang. Notorious for his cruelty and use of unfair tactics, Stalinââ¬â¢s gang dominated the rough streets of Gori. (Photo by Hulton Archive/Getty Images) While at the seminary, Stalin discovered the works of Karl Marx. He joined the local socialist party and soon his interest in overthrowing Czar Nicholas II and the monarchical system outstripped any desire he might have had to be a priest. Stalin dropped out of school just a few months shy of graduating to become a revolutionary, giving his first public speech in 1900. The Life of a Revolutionary After having joined the revolutionary underground, Stalin went into hiding using the alias ââ¬Å"Koba.â⬠Nevertheless, the police captured Stalin in 1902 and exiled him to Siberia for the first time in 1903. When free from prison, Stalin continued to support the revolution and helped organize peasants in the 1905 Russian Revolution against Czar Nicholas II. Stalin would be arrested and exiled seven times and escape six between 1902 and 1913. In between arrests, Stalin married Ekaterina Svanidze, a sister of a classmate from seminary, in 1904. They had one son, Yacov, before Yekaterina died of typhus in 1907. Yacov was raised by his mothers parents until he was reunited with Stalin in 1921 in Moscow, though the two were never close. Yacov would be among the millions of Russian casualties of World War II. Vladimir Lenin Stalins commitment to the party intensified when he met Vladimir Ilyich Lenin, head of the Bolsheviks in 1905. Lenin recognized Stalins potential and encouraged him. After that, Stalin held the Bolsheviks in any way he could, including committing several robberies to raise funds. Because Lenin was in exile, Stalin took over as editor of Pravda, the official newspaper of the Communist Party, in 1912. That same year, Stalin was appointed to the Bolsheviks Central Committee, cementing his role as a key figure in the Communist movement. The Name Stalin Also in 1912, Stalin, while writing for the revolution while still in exile, first signed an article Stalin, meaning steel man, for the power it connotes. This would continue to be a frequent pen name and, after the successful Russian Revolution in October 1917, his surname. (Stalin would continue to use aliases throughout the rest of his life, though the world would know him as Joseph Stalin.) 1917 Russian Revolution Joseph Stalin and Vladimir Lenin address the proletariat during the Russian Revolution. (Photo by Hulton Archive/Getty Images) Stalin missed much of the activity leading up to the Russian Revolution in 1917, because he was exiled to Siberia from 1913ââ¬â1917. Upon his release in March of 1917, Stalin resumed his role as a Bolshevik leader. By the time he was reunited with Lenin, who also returned to Russia a few weeks after Stalin, Czar Nicholas II had already abdicated as part of the February Russian Revolution. With the czar deposed, the Provisional Government was in charge. The October 1917 Russian Revolution Lenin and Stalin, however, wanted to topple the Provisional Government and install a Communist one, controlled by the Bolsheviks. Feeling that the country was ready for another revolution, Lenin and the Bolsheviks began a nearly bloodless coup on October 25, 1917. In just two days, the Bolsheviks had taken over Petrograd, the capital of Russia, and thus became the leaders of the country. Not everyone was happy with the Bolsheviks ruling the country, thus Russia was thrust immediately into civil war as the Red Army (the Bolshevik forces) battled the White Army (made up of various anti-Bolshevik factions). The Russian Civil War lasted until 1921. Russian revolutionaries and leaders Joseph Stalin, Vladimir Ilyich Lenin, and Mikhail Ivanovich Kalinin at the Congress of the Russian Communist Party. Although Stalin and Trotsky were rivals, Lenin appreciated their distinct abilities and promoted both. Trotsky vs. Stalin Trotsky was far more popular than Stalin, so Stalin was given the less public role of General Secretary of the Communist Party in 1922. Trotsky, who was a persuasive orator, maintained a visible presence in foreign affairs and was perceived by many as the heir apparent. However, what neither Lenin nor Trotsky foresaw was that Stalins position allowed him to build loyalty within the Communist Party, as an essential factor in his eventual takeover. Head of the Communist Party Tensions between Stalin and Trotsky increased when Lenins health began to fail in 1922 with the first of several strokes, raising the difficult question of who would be Leninââ¬â¢s successor. From his sickbed, Lenin had advocated for shared power and maintained this vision until his death on January 21, 1924. Ultimately, Trotsky was no match for Stalin because Stalin had spent his years in the party building loyalty and support. By 1927, Stalin had effectively eliminated all of his political rivals (and exiled Trotsky) to emerge as the head of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union. (Photo by Keystone/Getty Images) Stalins willingness to use brutality to achieve political aims was well established by the time he took power; nevertheless, the Soviet Union (as it was known after 1922) was unprepared for the extreme violence and oppression that Stalin unleashed in 1928. This was the first year of Stalins Five Year Plan, a radical attempt to bring the Soviet Union into the industrial age. Famine In the name of Communism, Stalin seized assets, including farms and factories, and reorganized the economy. However, these efforts often led to less efficient production, ensuring that mass starvation swept the countryside. To mask the disastrous results of the plan, Stalin maintained export levels, shipping food out of the country even as rural residents died by the hundreds of thousands. Any protest of his policies resulted in immediate death or relocation to a gulag (a prison camp in the remote regions of the nation). The Disastrous Effects Kept Secret The first Five Year Plan (1928-1932) was declared completed a year early and the second Five Year Plan (1933-1937) was launched with equally disastrous results. A third Five Year began in 1938, but was interrupted by World War II in 1941. While all of these plans were unmitigated disasters, Stalinââ¬â¢s policy forbidding any negative publicity led the full consequences of these upheavals to remain hidden for decades. To many who were not directly impacted, the Five Year Plans appeared to exemplify Stalins proactive leadership. Presenting himself as a paternal figure watching over his people, Stalins image and actions could not have been more distinct. While paintings and statues of Stalin kept him in the public eye, Stalin also promoted himself by aggrandizing his past through tales of his childhood and his role in the revolution. However, with millions of people dying, statues and tales of heroics could only go so far. Thus, Stalin made it a policy that showing anything less than complete devotion was punishable by exile or death. Going beyond that, Stalin eradicated any form of dissent or competition. No Outside Influences; No Free Press Not only did Stalin readily arrest anyone remotely suspected of having a different view, he also closed religious institutions and confiscated church lands in his reorganization of the Soviet Union. Books and music that were not to Stalins standards were banned as well, virtually eliminating the possibility of outside influences. No one was allowed to say a negative thing against Stalin, especially the press. No news of the death and devastation in the countryside was leaked to the public; only news and images that presented Stalin in a flattering light were allowed. Stalin also famously changed the name of the city of Tsaritsyn to Stalingrad in 1925 to honor the city for its role in the Russian civil war. (Photo by Hulton Archive/Getty Images) In 1919, Stalin married Nadezhda (Nadya) Alliluyeva, his secretary and fellow Bolshevik. Stalin had become close with Nadyas family, many of whom were active in the revolution and would go on to hold important positions under Stalinââ¬â¢s government. The young revolutionary captivated Nadya and together they would have two children, a son, Vasily, in 1921, and a daughter, Svetlana, in 1926. As carefully as Stalin controlled his public image, he could not escape the criticism of his wife, Nadya, one of the few bold enough to stand up to him. Nadya often protested his deadly policies and found herself at the receiving end of Stalins verbal and physical abuse. While their marriage began with mutual affection, Stalins temperament and alleged affairs contributed greatly to Nadyas depression. After Stalin berated her particularly harshly at a dinner party, Nadya committed suicide on November 9, 1932. (Photo by Ivan Shagin/Slava Katamidze Collection/Getty Images) Despite Stalinââ¬â¢s attempts to eradicate all dissent, some opposition emerged, particularly among party leaders who understood the devastating nature of Stalinââ¬â¢s policies. Nevertheless, Stalin was reelected in 1934. This election made Stalin keenly aware of his critics and he soon began to eliminate anyone he perceived as opposition, including his most substantial political rival, Sergi Kerov. Sergi Kerov was assassinated in 1934 and Stalin, who most believe was responsible, used Kerovs death to extol the dangers of the anti-Communist movement and tighten his grip on Soviet politics. Thus began the period known as the Great Terror. Few leaders have culled their ranks as dramatically as Stalin did in during the Great Terror of the 1930s. He targeted members of his cabinet and government, soldiers, clergy, intellectuals, or anyone else he deemed suspect. Those seized by his secret police would be tortured, imprisoned, or killed (or a combination of these experiences). Stalin was indiscriminate in his targets, and top government and military officials were not immune from prosecution. In fact, the Great Terror eliminated many key figures in government. Widespread Paranoia During the Great Terror, widespread paranoia reigned. Citizens were encourages to turn each other in and those captured often pointed figures at neighbors or coworkers in hopes of saving their own lives. Farcical show trials publicly confirmed the guilt of the accused and ensured that family members of those accused would remain socially ostracized - if they managed to evade arrest. The military was particularly decimated by the Great Terror since Stalin perceived a military coup as the greatest threat. With World War II on the horizon, this purging of the military leadership would later prove a severe detriment to the Soviet Unionââ¬â¢s military effectiveness. Death Toll While the estimates of death tolls vary greatly, the lowest numbers credit Stalin with killing 20 million during the Great Terror alone. Beyond being one of the greatest examples of state-sponsored murder in history, the Great Terror demonstrated Stalins obsessive paranoia and willingness to prioritize it over national interests. (Photo by Hulton Archive/Getty Images) Stalin and Hitler Sign a Non-Aggression Pact By 1939, Adolf Hitler was a powerful threat to Europe and Stalin could not help but be concerned. While Hitler was opposed to Communism and had little regard for Eastern Europeans, he appreciated that Stalin represented a formidable force and the two signed a non-aggression pact in 1939. Operation Barbarossa After Hitler drew the rest of Europe into war in 1939, Stalin pursued his own territorial ambition in the Baltic region and Finland. Although many warned Stalin that Hitler intended to break the pact (as he had with other European powers), Stalin was surprised when Hitler launched Operation Barbarossa, a full-scale invasion of the Soviet Union on June 22, 1941. (Photo by Keystone/Hulton Archive/Getty Images) When Hitler invaded the Soviet Union, Stalin joined the Allied powers, which included Great Britain (led by Sir Winston Churchill) and later the United States (led by Franklin D. Roosevelt). Although they shared a joint enemy, the communist/capitalist rift ensured that mistrust characterized the relationship. However, before the Allies could come help, the German army swept eastward through the Soviet Union. Initially, some Soviet residents were relieved when the German army invaded, thinking that German rule had to be an improvement over Stalinism. Unfortunately, the Germans were merciless in their occupation and ravaged the territory they conquered. Scorched Earth Policy Stalin, who was determined to stop the German armyââ¬â¢s invasion at any cost, employed a scorched earth policy. This entailed burning all farms fields and villages in the path of the advancing Germany army to prevent German soldiers from living off the land. Stalin hoped that, without the ability to pillage, the German armyââ¬â¢s supply line would run so thin that the invasion would be forced to stop. Unfortunately, this scorched earth policy also meant the destruction of the homes and livelihoods of Russian people, creating massive numbers of homeless refugees. It was the harsh Soviet winter that really slowed down the advancing Germany army, leading to some of the bloodiest battles of World War II. However, to force a German retreat, Stalin needed greater assistance. Although Stalin began to receive American equipment in 1942, what he really wanted was Allied troops deployed to the Eastern Front. The fact that this never happened infuriated Stalin and increased the resentment between Stalin and his allies. The Atomic Bomb Another rift in the relationship between Stalin and the Allies came when the United States secretly developed the nuclear bomb. The mistrust between the Soviet Union and the United States was obvious when the U.S. refused to share the technology with the Soviet Union, causing Stalin to launch his own nuclear weapons program. The Soviets Turn the Nazis Back With supplies provided by the Allies, Stalin was able to turn the tide at the Battle of Stalingrad in 1943 and forced the retreat of the German army. With the tide turned, the Soviet army continued to push the Germans all the way back to Berlin, ending World War II in Europe in May of 1945. While the United States and the United Kingdom sought stability, Stalin had no desire to cede the territory he had conquered during the war. Therefore, Stalin claimed the territory he had liberated from Germany as part of the Soviet empire. Under Stalinââ¬â¢s tutelage, Communist parties took control of each countryââ¬â¢s government, cut off all communication with the West, and became official Soviet satellite states. The Truman Doctrine While the Allies were unwilling to launch a full-scale war against Stalin, U.S. President Harry Truman recognized that Stalin could not go unchecked. In response to Stalins domination of Eastern Europe, Truman issued the Truman Doctrine in 1947, in which the United States pledged to help nations at risk of a being overtaken by Communists. It was immediately enacted to thwart Stalin in Greece and Turkey, which would ultimately remain independent throughout the Cold War. The Berlin Blockade and Airlift Stalin again challenged the Allies in 1948 when he attempted to seize control of Berlin, a city that had been divided among the victors of World War II. Stalin had already seized East Germany and severed it from the West as part of his post-war conquest. Hoping to claim the entire capital, which was located entirely within East Germany, Stalin blockaded the city in an attempt to force the other Allies to abandon their sectors of Berlin. However, determined to not give in to Stalin, the U.S. organized a nearly year-long airlift that flew massive amounts of supplies into West Berlin. These efforts rendered the blockade ineffective and Stalin finally ended the blockade on May 12, 1949. Berlin (and the rest of Germany) remained divided. This division ultimately manifested in the creation of the Berlin Wall in 1961 during the height of the Cold War. The Cold War Continues While the Berlin Blockade was the last major military confrontation between Stalin and the West, Stalinââ¬â¢s policies and attitude toward the West would continue as Soviet policy even after Stalinââ¬â¢s death. This competition between the Soviet Union and the United States escalated during the Cold War to the point where nuclear war seemed imminent. The Cold War ended only with the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991. Death Soviet Communist leader Joseph Stalin lying in state in the hall of Trade Union House, Moscow. (March 12, 1953). (Photo by Keystone/Getty Images) In his final years, Stalin tried to reshape his image to that of a man of peace. He turned his attention to rebuilding the Soviet Union and invested in many domestic projects, such as bridges and canals ââ¬â most were never completed. While he was writing his Collected Works in an attempt to define his legacy as an innovative leader, evidence suggests that Stalin was also working on his next purge, an attempt to eliminate the Jewish population that remained in Soviet territory. This never came to pass since Stalin suffered a stroke on March 1, 1953 and died four days later. Stalin maintained his cult of personality even after his death. Like Lenin before him, Stalinââ¬â¢s body was embalmed and put on public display. In spite of the death and destruction he inflicted upon those he ruled, Stalinââ¬â¢s death devastated the nation. The cult-like loyalty he inspired remained, although it would dissipate in time. Khrushchev broke the secrecy regarding Stalinââ¬â¢s atrocities and led the Soviet Union in a period of de-Stalinization, which included beginning to account for the catastrophic deaths under Stalin and acknowledging the flaws in his policies. It wasnââ¬â¢t an easy process for the Soviet people to break through Stalinââ¬â¢s cult of personality to see the real truths of his reign. The estimated numbers of dead are staggering. The secrecy regarding those ââ¬Å"purgedâ⬠has left millions of Soviet citizens wondering the exact fate of their loved ones. No Longer Idolize Stalin With these new-found truths about Stalinââ¬â¢s reign, it was time to stop revering the man who had murdered millions. Pictures and statues of Stalin were gradually removed and in 1961, the city of Stalingrad was renamed Volgograd. In October of 1961, Stalins body, which had lain next to Leninââ¬â¢s for nearly eight years, was removed from the mausoleum. Stalinââ¬â¢s body was buried nearby, surrounded by concrete so that he could not be moved again. Sources Rappaport, Helen. Joseph Stalin: A Biographical Companion.
